Hymn Text
Verse 1
O King of kings, in splendor,
Of glory throned on high;
Dost thou our strong defender,
Thy Church still magnify
Our holy Father shielding
His enemies o’erthrew;
May Peter's faith unyielding
The paths to heav’n foreshew.
Verse 2
That citadel surrounding,
The angry foeman raves,
Upon that rock resounding,
Dash high the sullen waves.
Our holy Father shielding
His enemies o’erthrew;
May Peter's faith unyielding
The paths to heav’n foreshew.
Verse 3
Yet Lord, in siege laborious,
Though hell itself should rage,
Thou wondrous, thou victorious,
Art known from age to age.
Our holy Father shielding
His enemies o’erthrew;
May Peter's faith unyielding
The paths to heav’n foreshew.
Verse 4
We trust thy conqu'ring powèr
Now and in time to be
I he gift of peace to showèr
On those who trust in thee.
Our holy Father shielding
His enemies o’erthrew;
May Peter's faith unyielding
The paths to heav’n foreshew.
Verse 5
Still, still with light supernal
Those battlements shall gleam,
And Peter's rock, eternal,
Confront the restless stream.
Our holy Father shielding
His enemies o’erthrew;
May Peter's faith unyielding
The paths to heav’n foreshew.
